South Africa looking at waste rather than tobacco as aviation biofuel future : Biofuels Digest

In South Africa, Reuters reports that local social enterprise Fetola, WWF, and SkyNRG have teamed up to use $1.4 million in funding from the European Union’s SWITCH Africa Green Program to develop aviation fuel from waste biomass. Call the Waste to Wing program, it aims to find another alternative for producing jet fuel after finding that using solaris tobacco as feedstock required too much land to achieve the required economy of scale. The program will bring together 25 small businesses who will be in charge of collecting and supplying the waste biomass, including from invasive plants.
