The Lateral Axis Wind Turbine


Sri Lankan inventor Leelananda Jayasuriya just sent us this concept for a Lateral Axis Wind Turbine. The turbine functions just like a Ferris Wheel, with the blades orbiting in an epicyclical path around the central shaft. Leelananda believes there are many advantages to his design: it can rotate with the direction of the wind, it generates less sound, is safer for birds and bats, and can be built for cheap using locally available materials. He also believes that it could potentially generate up to 20 Megawatts of commercial electricity.

We’re not sure how feasible that is, considering wind turbines typically generate 1.5 MW. It also seems Leelananda’s design has more moving parts, which must require more maintenance. That said, this could have practical applications for rural areas to power small farming operations and water pumps. Scroll down for photos, videos and comments.
