A new trial in the U.K. will explore the performance of recycled EV batteries in residential solar+storage systems.

London-based Powervault this week said it reached an agreement to reuse Renault’s EV batteries in 50 trail units at homes of customers who already have solar installed. Powervault said the trial will be run with customers of M&S Energy and housing tenants and schools in the South East.

“Thanks to this home energy storage partnership with Powervault, Renault is adding a new element into its global strategy for second life batteries, which already covers a large number of usages from industrial to residential building and districts,” Nicolas Schottey, program director, EV batteries and infrastructures at Renault, said in a June 5 statement. “The second life use not only gives additional life to electric vehicle batteries before they are recycled, but also allow consumers to save money.”

According to Powervault, EV batteries usually have a lifetime of eight to 10 years, and their reuse within the home battery system will give the batteries up to 10 years of additional useful life.

Powervault said the trial will start in July and last 12 months.
