Q: What was the reason for founding your organization – what was the open niche you saw that could be addressed with a new product or service? What was the problem, or gap, or opportunity?

We started Ways2H to improve the global environment by eliminating waste while producing carbon-negative renewable hydrogen. There’s an urgent need to scale up clean hydrogen production to replace fossil fuels used for mobility, power generation and industrial applications. With 95% of hydrogen fuel currently produced from natural gas or other fossil sources, the world needs new sources of renewable hydrogen to reach a carbon-negative future.

Waste is an energy-rich renewable resource that Ways2H’s net zero-carbon technology can unlock without incineration. When paired with carbon capture and storage, our waste-based hydrogen is carbon-negative. Our hydrogen production facilities are modular and can be built in a range of sizes, with smaller units easily transportable for installation where waste is generated. By diverting waste from landfills, we’re upcycling an unused resource to create a new product and reduce landfill methane emissions.

Q: Tell us about your organization. What do you do?

We turn the world’s worst waste into renewable hydrogen for mobility fuel and power generation. Municipal solid waste, medical waste, plastics, sewage sludge and agricultural residue. We are producing commercial modular waste-to-hydrogen units in a variety of sizes.

Our first few units are transportable, able to fit in three 20-foot containers, and process 1 ton of waste per day to produce 40 to 50 kilograms of hydrogen per day, enough to fill the tanks of 10 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Our first two commercial units are under construction in Japan and California, and we have a pipeline of additional projects that will be deployed globally.

Q: What stage of development are you?  Choose one:

Commercial stage – have mature products or services on the market.

Q: What do your technologies, products or services do and accomplish – how does it (they) work, who is it (they) aimed for?

Ways2H is turning the world’s worst waste into renewable hydrogen because we see a clean energy resource in the growing volumes of trash and unrecyclable plastic that are causing problems around the world. We also see a growing opportunity to supply renewable hydrogen to countries that are looking for more opportunities to increase the use of hydrogen for transportation, power generation, energy storage and other uses.

Our target audiences include hydrogen fueling station operators or commercial fleets operators who want a source of clean hydrogen for their fuel-cell vehicles. Renewable energy generators looking for distributed renewable hydrogen supply. Waste companies and municipalities that want to upcycle waste to produce clean hydrogen to fuel vehicles or generate electricity. Industrial operations that have a waste profile and a need for clean fuel, and other organizations including waste treatment or clean energy production companies, data centers, hospitals, and more.

Q: Competitively, what gives your technology, product or service set an edge in cost or performance, sustainability, or any other aspect, that makes it stand out from the crowd, In short, what makes it transformative?

Our waste-to-hydrogen production units are the only modular, transportable units of their kind that can be installed onsite, close to where waste is produced and where hydrogen fuel is needed, avoiding the need for expensive hydrogen transportation infrastructure to be built. Our process is also unique as there is no burning or incineration of the waste, the process self-supplies its own heat and it is self-balancing, which means it operates automatically, without the need for intervention to ensure the process has adequate oxygen and other inputs to operate.

Our renewable hydrogen produced from waste is competitive with hydrogen produced from solar and wind-powered electrolysis because there are no energy costs and no costs for the waste feedstock.

Q: What are the 3 top milestones you have accomplished in the past 3 years?

1) Our affiliate, Japan Blue Energy Corp., successfully proved our waste-to-hydrogen technology at a demonstration plant in Joso, Japan, after previously completing three pilot projects.

2) We obtained important patents for the technology and process.

3) We raised an initial seed round of funding and are working on our next round.

Q: What are the 3 top milestones you will accomplish in the next 3 years?

1) Commission our first two commercial modular waste-to-hydrogen units.

2) Develop and build out our pipeline of projects.

3) Raise additional funding so we can expand.
